Course Description
We are living in a time where teaching an accurate portrayal of history is under attack. Meanwhile, the experiences and voices of students of color are being pushed further toward the margins. Culturally responsive teaching and pedagogy is a powerful practice that can be used as a tool to increase student engagement, cultivate positive identity development, and build skills in critical thinking, analysis, and social awareness.
In this four session course, participants will be guided to explore and implement research-based strategies that put the experiences, history, culture, and voices of their students at the center of their instructional practices. Through this Black affinity offering, teachers will have an opportunity to design, test, and refine a culturally responsive teaching prototype that affirms, empowers, and propels their students’ learning.
Participants will:
-
Explore and apply the components of culturally relevant and responsive pedagogy.
-
Design and implement a prototype to apply in their classroom practice to engage their students in culturally responsive ways.
-
Form a community of practice to support each other in the design and implementation of their prototypes.
-
Feel energized, connected, and affirmed through immersion in a Black affinity space.
-
Feel empowered to use teaching strategies that will center students’ culture, heritage, and experiences.
-
Experience this course as a culturally responsive space that supports them to access their intelligence and agency to teach in culturally responsive ways.

We are intensely focused on humanizing our virtual spaces. We focus on interactivity and connection (these training courses are not webinars), frequent screen and body breaks, and attending to learning, practice, and healing in community with people across the country.
Who Should Attend
Black classroom teachers working in district, charter, private, or independent TK-12 schools who are able to attend the full course. We encourage prospective attendees to reach out to principals/administration to request use of professional development funds to pay the registration fee; we do not expect Black teachers to personally pay for this offering. We know that teachers are sometimes not aware of PD funds or are hesitant to ask, so we encourage you to advocate for yourself and your leadership development by learning your school’s process of accessing funding. Click here for sample language to ask for funding support.
We also have 20 full scholarships available for district, charter, and private school teachers who are not able to secure professional development funding. Please note that scholarship recipients will be asked to pay a $50.00 deposit that will be reimbursed after your full participation in this event. We are requesting this deposit fee to help ensure maximization of scholarship resources. Click here to access the scholarship application.
